Hi friends,

I'm wondering if Cognos has a function like tableau extract, where it creates a snapshot of the database for the reporting.

Our Cognos server has good specs but the DWH is a bit slow if many ppl request data, so i thought i may can bring the load to the cognos server somehow as the data for many reports doesn't change often.

Thanks for you help!
As always excuse my beginner questions.

Hi,

You haven't specified what version of Cognos you are using? If you are on any of the v11 or 12 releases, you can create a data set (or multiple data sets) containing the data you need, and use this as the basis of the reports (via a Data Module). You can also schedule the data set(s) to refresh.

Cheers!

Cognos also has the ability to create data cubes which can reside on the Cognos server and the reports can get the data from those cubes instead of connecting to your DW.

In addition to this, the newer versions also use a method called Dynamic Query Mode which reduces the load on DW by using data caches.

Hi,

sorry for that we are on the latest v11 release, waiting for a bit more stabile v12.

Datasets sounds like what i was looking for, I did a bit of research but couldnt find if they will load all data on refresh or just new added rows from the tables.

Where does the Dataset get saved? In the content store server? Or on the Cognos server?

thanks for your help!

Hi, i tried the dynamic cubes with one table but seems its not really faster, also couldn't see any load on the cognos server while query the dynamic cube package.

Hi,

Data sets get fully refreshed each time. Historically, data sets were always held as Parquet files within the Content Store database, but the 12.2 release now allows you to store them as tabular data in DB2.
