Title: Developing Cognos Reports using GENIO datawarehousing
Post by: tabanchuy on 11 May 2010 08:48:03 PM
Hi, I'm currently starting a new job as a full time cognos developer. I used to be an AS400 programmer and i develop cognos reports as my other responsibility. I always refer to the same catalog i made when making a new impromptu report. I'm not used to using GENIO yet. I have about a week to start a project as for my transition. Could someone walk me thru GENIO

1. Do I need to make a catalog when creating a report still? Or is it something that GENIO has altered being an ETL? Can you actually define file connections in GENIO?

--> If catalogs are no longer needed, how do i go about connecting to GENIO to access data???

Please enlighten me!!!

Genio as in Hummingbird Genio?  This is not a Cognos product, so you're not likely to find anyone on here who knows much about it, sorry.

Ok thanks for replying, i appreciate that sir! I have always used ODBC connections directly to the source database and not use any datawarehousing middleware to alter my connections. I was just hoping anyone could be using if not the same software atleast the same approach as ours.

Anyway sir, you proved to be a lot caring towards others, please allow me to add you as my first buddy in this forum!!!

....How about COGNOS WEB PORTAL(UPFRONT),do you use this technology?

Thanks!!!

Hi,

There should be lots of experience on here of using Cognos tools against a data warehouse - usually it works out far easier to do things this way as there is a single, consistent, clean, optimised data source to use rather than a mixture of complex transactional sources.

Cognos Upfront was (is) the old Cognos 7 web portal.  It's been a while since I used it in anger.  From your posts I'd guess you are using Impromptu and IWR?

Best regards,

MF.

Yes you are correct, Cognos 7.4 with Web Portal. We have not upgraded yet. heheheh. It is only now that i will be a full pledge Cognos developer. It's a bit funny it has already been a while since you have upgraded to cognos 8, and it's only now that i will experience these technologies (Web Portal). Plus the fact that you said you used it with anger! ahahaha.

I really appreciate your replies sir. I have seen your posts to other threads as i have not started a thing here in my new company. hehehe. You're definitely one of the reasons why these kinds of forums never die.

I haven't really used Cognos 7 much since September 2005 when Cognos 8 was launched.  Sometimes anger did factor in the C7 experience too - especially when trying to deploy from one server to another :)

Welcome to the forum, by the way!

Regards,

MF.
