Hi,

Not exactly.  Impromptu is a Windows-based reporting tool, designed back in the early 90s. It needs to be installed locally on an author's PC, and will report off a single relational data source.

Report Studio is a web-based reporting authoring environment, included as part of the Cognos 8 architecture.  It can be used to create reports from data spanning multiple data sources of multiple types.

Impromptu and Cognos 8 have entirely different architectures, and are completely different animals.

Regards,

MF.

Hi,

Yes, many businesses still use Impromptu.  It is still being developed and supported by IBM.

Take a look on the IBM website for details of Impromptu courses running in your geography.  As I recall, there are a couple of courses - one for authoring and one for administration.

Impromptu is not part of Cognos 8, so unless you plan to use Impromptu as well as Cognos 8, I see no reason for you to need to learn it.

Regards,

MF.
