Title: Modeling product dimension
Post by: nsd on 28 Apr 2010 02:50:27 AM
Hi

Our product dimension is pretty complex .e can drill down by product line/dept/category or style/color/size.. etc.

But there are additional levels higher up in the product dimension such as company, brand. In some cases, relation between company and brand is 1 to 1 (i.e. same).

The challenge is how do you define the product dimension so users don't have drill down from 'company' and brand levels each time.  Should I have one product dimension with multiple hierarchies or multiple product dimensions with one hierarchy each? If I start the product dimension at product line - then it will show all product lines in the product table.

Is there a way to filter members in a dimension based on user selection of members in other dimensions? If this is possible, then I can create company and brand dimensions and have two product dimensions start with product line and style.

Thank you very much for any ideas.

If you have too many members for the productline dimension you could create a custom level (say the 26 groups based on the alphabet) and use this a the first level in the hierarchy and create seperate dimensions for branch and company. This restricts downdrilling, but combining dimensions will still give you all options..
