Title: Nostalgia Trip
Post by: cognosjon on 26 Apr 2010 09:11:48 AM
I'm currently having a Nostalgia trip with a few of my colleagues and have come to the marvellous spinning cube that used to appear when users ran reports in 8.1 rtm and I believe reportnet before that.

Would anyone know of a link where we could grab a copy of the image from?

Thanks

I think I may have it somewhere.  If I can dig it out, I will post it onto this thread...

All we need next is the swimming fish... :)

After all of the great help I've had on this site, I think this has ended up being my favourite post. Awesome.

I just remembered that ReportNet Addict used to have the spinning cube as his avatar on this forum a while ago.  A quick check shows he doesn't still use it though.  I must admit, I still prefer it to the spinning hourglass now used in Cognos 8.

The Impromptu fish!!! now that was awesome :o  ....

Don't suppose there is any chance that you could upload the spinning cube image is there as the site from which I work conveniently block most images displayed on the web so I can't currently relive the joy of the cube..

Thinking about it, I may have the fish image somewhere......I'll have a look.

The lovely spinning cube is still included when you install 8.4 !!! how could I have missed it.

it sits in folder webcontent\samples\images\cub.gif

now once I find that fish my day is complete and its only just started.......

Just post it up onto a picture site such as photobucket.  You can then add an Image link to it in a post on here.

Cheers!

If I am not mistaken, you can alter a config file/setting to use any gif you want, in place of the hourglass.  If this is indeed true, does anyone have the steps to perform this mod?

I'm not at an install at the moment, but I believe the image is webcontent\skins\<SKIN>\branding\progress.gif (at least for 8.2) You can replace that image with whatever you want.

Now personally that cube is driving me crazy. You only ever see 5 out of 6 sides.

The spinning cube is fast becoming a favourite again in our office, I can't believe how much rejoicing the little spinning fella has brought with him ;D

I just need to try and convince someone that we need to make this a business critical change to the live production servers............Users will feel more relaxed and I swear that reports seem to run faster when the cube is spinning.

Shhh!!!  You are giving away some of our best-kept performance tuning secrets.  :-X  This is one of the undocumented changes that make us (in the know) look great when we go on-site and fix performance issues that nobody else can sort!  ;) ;D

By courtesy of cogknowhow, I now have the little fishy fella himself......

Next job is to find a reason for me to embed the image into a new report!!!   ;)

I've tried to attached the image but keep receving the following message:

"The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved. "

Not had this prob before...........................

I hope you're keeping the little fella in a nice clean tank and feeding him every day, Mr. C! :)

Is the error from trying to attach the image to a post in this forum?  If so, just upload it to imgbb.com and copy the IMG tags into your post.

Cheers!

This could be my most useless post to date, but.....

Did the impromptu fish have a name?

Hmmmmmmmmm...........

I can't believe i'm going to go along with this now  ::) ( even though I did start the whole affair) but as far as i'm aware the fish didn't have a name. I know that I called it many names when things werent quite working as they should!!!!! many of which I can't write on here.

So the big question is, what should we call the fish? Answers on a postcard to JGirl as she came up with the question...... ;D

I don't know if this is the official name but we always called it 'Gil' primarily because of one of the developers which showed up in the about section of the app.

Fantastic!!! All you need now is a generic error message that says "Imagine a circle..." ;)

Hmmm. Perhaps that reference is a little too old to be understood? Buy me a beer one day and I will explain :)
