Title: Cognos 8 on UNIX
Post by: sjagusch on 20 Jan 2006 04:20:16 PM
Does anyone have any thoughts on installing Cognos 8 on UNIX.  UNIX can be better for performance, however, does all the components work well on UNIX.  Are there any integration issues running on UNIX.

Are there any issues running a development environment on Window, and production on UNIX.  Can the Content Store easily be migrated to the UNIX environment.  Oracle DB will be used on either way.

Hold your ponnies, pardner! Why should UNIX be generally faster then Windows or Linux?

There are no issues running heterogenous environments or migrating content from one env to another. You will need DataDirect drivers for M$ SQL databases. Oracle and DB2 are covered.

The original poster didn't say "UNIX should be generally faster then Windows".. He said UNIC can be better for performance.  He never mentioned Linux (which is UNIX anyway).

A Cognos expert (from Cognos) told me today that Transformer can perform better under unix if the data for/in the cube caused it to use multi-threading whereas Transformer can perform better under Windows NT if the data caused it to use multi-processing.

From my know experience I don't think there is any significant advantage either way.

My experience shows Windows to be building faster ALL the time. Probably just because a single CPU can process 3 billion instructions per second, instead of one. And perhaps the Windows code has been better tested.
