Create an export from within Cognos Administration of the reports/package. you can always then re-import if you wish.

hi cognosjon

when I am installing COG FM it takes me to C:\Program Files\cognos\c8

which is also the location for cognos_bi server, if i click nxt then it's says that ot will overwrite the existing files, so my question is what should the target folder for FM should it the same location as Cognos BI server??

u can install it technically where ever you like though I wouldn't recommend installing it onto a production server.

"SQL Server 2000 Sample Databases" is not a valid deployment archive

the same database i have used for MSsql and it works fine

Your getting that error as its a sql database you trying to import, not a Cognos deployment archive ;).
If you want to use some samples for report design you will firstly need to install the Go Sales sample sql or oracle databases that cognos provide. Import them into your sql or oracle server and then find the go sales report deployment archive that Cognos provide and put that into the deployment location and import that file.

Take a look within the Installation & Configuration guide under the chapter titled ' Setting up the samples'

I have installed a version Cognos_BI_Server_8.4 and it does n't have the GO sales archive, so I went for the northwind and pubs sql database and installed it,. I have imported the database to MSsql server , butnow I have to import this northwind pub database to cognos environment thru New import in Cog admin.

Kindly educate me

You need to download the appropriate samples from the IBM Cognos support site if you don't have them.
If you are really struggling as badly as you appear to be then I would suggest some form of structured training.
The training provided by Cognos themselves is very good. ;)
