Title: Framework Manager - Analysis Studio
Post by: cognos_users on 23 Oct 2009 03:30:08 PM
Hi,

We are in Cognos 8.2. We have many frame work manager relational models and reports created. Now we are planning to build cubes. It is something like this - the data in the models is what we would want to have in each cube. So, my plan was to make a copy of the existing frame work model and convert the query subjects to Regular and Measure dims. Then publish the Dimensionally modelled package to use in Analysis Studio.

Now my question:
1. We have powerplay tool also. But upfront etc is not set up yet. Our goal is to access the cube from Analysis Studio. Please let me know what the best approach is. My manager is interested to have the model for the cube created through transformer rather than utilising the existing framework model. I am confused. Please respond a.s.a.p. Thanks!

1.) Why create new FM Models for dimensional Data? We have both relational and dimensional Date Objects in the same FM Models and are happy about this (dimensional objects depend on corresponding relational objects - so it's helpful to stick together the two worlds). The source data (database/tables) of all objects is the same - so why split the Metadata objects in several FM Models? Kepp them both in one Model.

2.) The dimensional objects from FM Model can be used in Analysis Studio. They appear like OLAP, but in reality it's ROLAP. Data isn't stored in a physical cube, all the queries while analysing data go down to the database. If this fits your performance need, you're done. For faster performance and real OLAP which can be used with Powerplay you have to use the Transformer to create Cognos Powercubes. The thing is, that Transformer can use your work from within Framework Manager. So in Transformer you can import your dimensional modelled objects from your FM Model - so lot's of work in Transformer is already done at this point!
