I just recently joined Nokia and really like it here. I have no familiarity at all with Cognos but it turns out that's their OLAP and reporting preference. I'm having to get up to speed quickly on Impromptu, Powerplay and Upfront.
As a longtime programmer I prefer having direct access to the API of an app or database and using VB to draw out what I need. I'm having a little difficulty getting access to what I need here, and any pointers will be helpful. Specifically, I need to publish live reports from our cubes on an intranet site.

See if Nokia has a ReportNet SDK licence, then you can hook into the BI BUS and do all kinds of customised app dev.
