Title: Unable to start Cognos Windows Service
Post by: sramachandra27 on 21 Jul 2009 11:48:13 PM
Hi,

I am trying to Configure Cognos on my laptop and i am using SQL 2005 as the data store along with Cognos 8.3

When i configure the details for the Content Store in Cognos Configuration in Content store and try to start all the services , it failed to start the Cognos Service.
At the same time when i went to the Windows Services and tried to start the Cognos Service which was in a stopped status, it didn't start. I tried to start it and then the Service didn't start saying that
"This service started and stopped as there is no use of this service something like the Plug and play service"
It is not exactly the same but something similar to it.

I initially wondered whether its an issue due to the incompatibility between the SQL 2005 and Cognos 8.3. but after googling have found the below which was successfull in my case
"telnet <db servername> 1433 ' ... if this opens a blank screen that means the server is properly setup to listen to the port 1433 and the connection is proper "

Fyi..

When i type in the below in IE http://localhost/cognos8 after configuring it in IIS, it throws me an error saying that the dispatcher service has not started. I related this to the Cognos service not starting . Please let me know if something else is causing this issue

Any kind of inputs on the same are greatly appreciated

Thanks in Advance
Ram

Ram,

Have you configured the Content Store for SQL Server in the Cognos Configuration?
If not, delete the Content Store that's there (on the left under Content Manager) and then insert a new Content Store

Change the database server to being the name of your SQL Server Instance
Insert a the User ID and Password
Change the Database Name

If you setup looks like the image then chech your configuration for the IIS service

Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

If you have set up the folders correctly then you will have the following within each folder

Application Pool
>> Cognos 8.3
  >>cognos8
  >>cgi-bin

Web Service Extensions
cognosisapi.dll (should be Allowed) [If your using the Isapi setup]

All of this informaiton is contained within the Helpfiles, search on Isapi and Content Store.

Many Thanks

Evorus

Incidently using the Isapi model you should be running

http://localhost/cognos8/isapi

hey dude,
thanks for those inputs. i was going through the steps as given above in the configuration manager and when i needed to enter my server name i have found that my SQL server service was not started . In the services when i try to start it, it seems to start and the stops throwing an error message saying that there is no application using it hence it its not starting
i had the same problem with the Cognos service the other day but now that service is is started state
Am having a peculiar problem which is that only of the servoces between SQL Server and Cognos are starting
both my services are not in started at the same time.
Does  anyone have any idea as to what might be causing the issue. Is it becaus of less RAM thats available. And do i need to stop some services to quick things up
I am actually running windows using the Virtual Toolbox software from my macbook

Any INputs on the same would be of great help

Sree Ram,

Have you been able to resolve this?

I had a few thoughts;

Have you created a SQL server Database ie cognos82_catalog and defined the user permissions on it?
as you need to have an empty database set up in SQL server with a username and password (SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode)

Unfortunately I cant comment on the Virtual Toolbox software as I wouldn't know where to begin

hie,

I was unable to get through with this , gave up after a lot of struggle.

Anyways, having learnt my lessons, as i have seen in most of the cases, i will try to configure with the Oracle and will post my experience with that in case i have any issues

Any suggestions on the fly as to which is the best version that works with Cognos 8.3

Thanks a lot for the insights provided
