Title: Cognos 8 - Framework Manager .vs. Data Manager ...
Post by: pass_cognos on 24 Jun 2009 08:13:41 AM
Greetings,

I've recently started working with Cognos 8 products after working off and on with Cognos ReportNet and Cognos 7 (PowerPlay, Impromptu, Decisionstream e.t.c.) products in the past.  Whilst I am overall impressed with Cognos 8, I am a little confused about the role of Data Manager and where it fits into the picture.  So, two questions ...

(i) Am I correct in thinking Data Manager is a replacement for Cognos Decisionstream?

(ii) There seems to be some speculation in my workplace that Cognos Framework Manager now has some ETL features built into it.  However, to my mind surely this would make Data Manager (the new Decisionstream??) redundant??  Personally, I am yet to find any features other than Query Subjects that come remotely close to providing some level of ETL functionality.  If I'm wrong here, what ETL features does Cognos Framework Manager provide?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jamin

I don't think there are any ETL features available in FM. U can only select and can't insert a record. U can create a datasource for importing the table, but there is none like source connection and target connection.

FM is strictly about generating a metadata-layer between source (database) and the reporting end. No ETL features whatsoever.
When you import a table, then only the metadata is loaded from the system tables of the source.

The ETL tool has been renamed, it is not AFAIK a new product.
