Was this type of answer really necessary?Ã,  I look to this forum for real answers, not smut (as do others).Ã,  Maybe a link to an article about gauges and dashboards would have been more appropriate.Ã,  I respectfully request that you remove the non-useful references from this posting.Ã,  Not everyone that views this board is an expert, even the novices need some tolerance, understanding and guidance.

I just thought it was an unexpectedly funny change of pace.  I wasn't laughing at the question.  Sorry.

If he would have watched the tutorial he would have understood what gauges are. The complete tutorial is build around a gauge.

All I wanted to make clear is that first you have to look before asking.
My question is now: Is it clear what I mean by this AFTER seeing the tutorial?

Read this first:

http://www.intelligententerprise.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=18300136

then run the

Executive Digital Dashboard Demo   at

http://www.dundas.com/products/dashboards/index.aspx?Section=Dashboards&Body=Samples.htm

Hopefully this will give you some understanding about why and when you might want to use gauges.

Of course, after you get all excited about using gauges,
you might want to read:

http://www.exceluser.com/dash/gauges_no.htm

to get a perspective of the other side (of not using gauges).

Your tutorials  (and COGNOiSe) are two of the greatest information sharing forums about COGNOS CRN that I have seen.  However, one really needs to know when and where to use the information and when something different might be more appropriate (or straightforward or relevant).  As for using eXcel instead of CRN, I cannot see that happening, but as far as presenting information in a useful and timely manner, that is the true goal.  Right now as far as I can see COGNOS is the one for getting the job done and this forum is truly useful for getting that job done using COGNOS - people on here are smart and give good answers and respond when they have something relevant to add to the discussion/solution.  Who knows, with MicroSoft pulling BI into their MS Office suite, in a few years all of us in this forum may be learning MS Office BI (which would be a truly sad day for me)!
