From what I can tell, the same user-interface opens when I click on either button/icon.

Yes - they are the same thing - just two different ways of getting there (either the Insights icon or the Analytics tab).

Thanks MFGF, I've since found a similar statement on page 46 of the "IBM Cognos Analytics Version 11.2.0 : Explorations User Guide".
