Title: How to tell how FM authenicates to the DB?
Post by: jcw3631 on 31 Aug 2018 01:36:00 PM
We can pull data and connect to all the DBs in FM but in the browser we cannot connect to any DB.  We get an error when we try to connect on the frontend.   We use Cognos 10.2.2 and our on a MS Server 2008 R2  and the DB is MS SQL Server 2017

Please help

You mean you can't connect using Report Studio? or Cognos Connection?

We can create the reports in Report Studio.  However when we try to validate a report it gives the error i posted.  Also, when trying to run reports get the same error in Report Studio.

In Cognos Connection we have checked the datasources connections and tried testing the connections and get the same OLE DB driver error.

it is possible that your FM (through cognos configuration) is using a different server from cognos connection where you get this error

They have just upgraded the SQL server from 2014 to 2017.  So what you are thinking is the name might of changed which is why we cannot connect to any of the DBs or run reports?  Do you think by chance permissions might of changed on the DB?

what i am thinking is your FM is accessing the db from server A (defined in cognos configuration). the db config in this server is ok.

then you open cognos connection from server B, thinking this is the server accessed by your FM.

this may or may not be the cause of the issue but i am suggesting first eliminating this possibility.

The error message complains about the password being wrong.  Have you checked that?

Can you test and get results in FM?

Are you sure that FM is configured to use the cognos server which you're using for running the reports?

Additional information:  The environment in this case is a single server implementation. FM is launched locally from workstations, but is able to open the Models and test the database fields and entries. We are able to get valid test results from the data sources.

Through Cognos Connection, we are not able to run any of the stored (previously working) reports. Even in the 'Cognos Administration' tool, we are not able to test the 'Data Source' connection. We get the same error message.

Does anyone know how to validate the existing SQL driver in use?

are you sure that your FM is using the same server as your cognos connection?

Yes, there is only one Cognos 10.2.2 server. However, the Content Store (all data) is on a second server (MS SQL Server 2017).

So can you focus on solving your database connection in cognos administration first.
I'm not sure if 2008 SQL uses the same database client as 2017. That's one thing check.

Hi,

You're posting in the Cognos 10 FM board, so I assume you're using Cognos 10? SQL Server 2017 is too new to be supported in Cognos 10 - C10 dropped out of official support last year, and is not being updated for platform/database conformance. To get support for SQL Server 2017 you'll need to upgrade to Cognos Analytics.

Cheers!

MF.
