Title: Cognos 8 [Logging Database Size]
Post by: CognosPolzovatel on 08 Jan 2008 12:21:52 PM
Does anyone have any idea of the potential size of the Cognos audit (logging) database? How large can it grow? How much space should be allocated? I searched the Cognos documentation and was unable to find a value for this.

Thanks.

Hi,

There's no definitive size details available for Auditing database. It depends on your architecture, logging level you choose, in my case for a period of 6months, for a single dispatcher it went from 100MB to 150MB.

It's good to have around 500MB size table space.

Hi,

The answer really depends on what logging levels you set in the Server Administration utility for each service, and probably the number of use requests.  The higher the logging level, the more information you will see written into the audit database.

Take a look at the Cognos 8 Administration and Security Guide - Chapter 3 for details of what gets recorded for each of the 5 logging levels you can define (Minimal, Basic, Request, Trace, Full).  This should give you some idea of what information will be useful to you.  My guess is that Basic or Request will be more than adequate under most circumstances.  Based on this, you can then guesstimate how many use requests to expect per day, then multiply by the space required for one entry to get an idea of the daily growth rate of the audit database.

It's not an exact science - whatever figure you come up with, I'd advise you to increase it by 50% at least, then monitor the size and tweak your database as required.

Best regards,

MF.

Thanks for the responses. I shall experiment with the different levels of logging - to see which one shall best fit our need. It makes sense that the DB size shall depend on the logging level & user requests. Currently, I am experimenting with Basic.
