Title: Value from numeric axis not showing in tooltip of line graph
Post by: Invisi on 25 Aug 2017 03:37:19 AM
I make a dashboard with various graphs in Report Studio. With the bar graphs, the tooltip shows the numeric value by default. With the line graphs, this information is missing. Any idea why they behave differently, and which setting I should change to get the line graph to show the numeric value of each data point?

Hi,
Try changing the line and markers property to line and markers and the tooltips should be displayed.
Good luck

I finally found the property (it's in the series) but when I choose it I get ugly blue small circles on my fine graph that I don't want and I can't seem to hide them without losing the numbers again!!!!! How do I get a smooth graph without (big, blue) points but with numbers?

Also in the properties of the series, find the palette property. In there, click on the "marker fill" box of the marker style. Select fill type color and assign a transparency of 100%.

/edit: note however that without visible markers, it's a pain in the *** for the report user to actually find the exact spot they have to hover over in order to get the tooltip. You may consider them ugly, but they're there for a reason. Function > style. ;)

I think I tried that and the numbers were gone, but that may also have been some delay (?) from Cognos. I will experiment with it more.

As for the ease of finding the 12 dots, my rule is: "follow the line". And for the rest I follow Few who uses no dots unless it's really needed. I never had problems getting the point locations from a line graph.

I got it to work where you say it is. I first changed transparency under the option "Value Markers" but that appeared to lose the values again.

I still find it strange that bars and lines behave differently in this area by default. But that's more something for the chief of chart design in Cognos at IBM.  8)

I don't think it's IBM's fault this time. If I've understood correctly, the C10 charts are via a third-party charting engine from AVS. RAVE visualizations are a different matter... :)

But isn't it that in Cognos 8 the default behaviour was different? On the same core charting engine?

Hi,

It's not the same core charting engine. There was a new charting engine introduced with Cognos 10 - the AVS engine. The original charting engine from ReportNet / Cognos 8 is still there for backwards compatibility, and you can switch to it from Tools > Options > Advanced tab by selecting the "Use legacy chart authoring" option.

This option is turned on by default at my client, I see. I turned it off for one simple graphical report I made and the result looked the same. What is the main difference? What do I gain by turning it off? Any idea where this option can be set generally?

It appears that when I have an open report in Report Studio and I change this setting, that it's changed in general, even when I don't save this report?

Hi,

It's a toggle for your user id when authoring new reports. By enabling or disabling the check box, you are determining which charting engine is used the next time you start Report Studio (and therefore which charts you are able to bring in to your reports). Changing the setting has no impact on existing reports. If a report contains a chart from the AVS engine, it will continue to contain that chart, no matter how the check box is set.

If you want to be able to use legacy charts, you need to enable the check box, close and re-open Report Studio, then bring a new chart into a report.
