Title: Get External Data Sources File Location
Post by: Cognos Talk on 25 Jul 2016 06:53:28 AM
I am currently testing get external data feature and created report based on it. I placed the file on the shared drive for everyone to access.
When attaching external csv file I use got external data wizard and successfully created report, when trying to run this report it asked again for the file location, which I provided, but 'OK' button at the bottom did not get activated, so had to click 'Cancel'. I saved the report and submitted it again, it run successfully. I asked an analyst to run this report on a different computer and they also got prompted for the file location, after specifying the file location 'OK' button was still greyed out, we hit cancel ans re-submit report and it run successfully. I found it stange.
How can I permanently cache the location of this file? Is network shared drive is a good storage location for this file or maybe it should be stored on the Cognos Server shared directory? When importing the file it five you an option to store file on the server, but after activating this button the file was not loaded to the server.
An you please advise on where to store this csv file?
Thank you

Hi,

I have the same issue and I have read in IBM docs that you have tu use the UNC ( Universal Naming Convention), such as '\\ server \ filename' and that the IBM Cognos server must have access to the file.

But I don't know how to do this !! If you find a solution, please notice it to me !

Hi folks,

You have to set the checkbox to allow server to automatically load file in the Select Data page of the Manage External Data wizard.

Here's a tutorial:
