Title: External Data File prompts when running the report
Post by: tel03 on 21 Apr 2016 04:06:34 PM
Hi guys,

Each time I run the report prompts me to browse for the external data file. The file is located on my local desktop and I want to make this report public so that other users can run it but every time it prompts for file when ever other user runs the report(I checked the option "allow the server to automatically load the file")

Is there a way to avoid it when the file is located on my local desktop? Please let me know

Thanks

I would have thought the file would need to be saved in a location that the other users can access. If it's on your desktop and your computer is switched off (for example) how will they get to the data?

Chris is right, it is not a good idea to rely on a file stored on a local desktop. The article below covers what should be done to ensure the file loads automatically.

I guess we don't have any other options other than saving the external file on server...

I would always ask what the source of the external data is and how it integrates with other enterprise data. If it really is required regularly by users for their authoring and reporting needs then perhaps it should be included formally in the data warehouse via ETL processes and modeled in Framework Manager for proper durable use.
