Hi All ,

I'm installing cognos 8.1.2 on my local xp professional machine with microsoft sql server 2005 . The connection to my content manager is failing .
I have the ip address on my machine. I'm getting the ip from a router.
the collation i selected is Arabic_cs_al. can some one plz confir,m if it's correct or not .
i did all the basic stuff .. creating virtual directories in IIS , is there anything specific that i need to know when installing with sql server 2005.
or is there any doc with cognos ???

please do the needful.

Hi,

Collation name should be Latin1_General_CI_AI, and Sql server should be installed in mixed mode. To avoid confusion about IP, just leave localhost as server name in application URIs in cognos configuration.

Thanks for the reply. i installed sql server with mixed mode. should i name the instance name as localhost ? I'll try changing the collation name ....
but after checking my log , i feel that it's somehow failing to establish link thru tcp/ip.... it's giing me an error msg even before chking the collation ....

1. if you have created a default instance for SQL 2005 then in the cognos config you can specify for the sql server name as localhost.
2. Ensure that SQL Server Browser service is started.
3. Try to disable windows firewall and see if it works.

right click the left side pane of the cognos configuration node for the content manager section,  a context menu under this you select and do a "Test"  which will tell you wether cognos is able to connect to the SQL server.

let us know if this worked.

I tried it with localhost even , but it didn't work for me  :( . May be i have to remove everything and re install it again .

Make sure SQL server 2005 is using TCP/IP.
Go to the SQL Server Configuration Manager and enable the tcp/ip protocol.

It is possible to install SQL server in windows mode, just make sure the cognos service runs as a network service and authenticate the content store that way.

It seems to be bit of confusion here, I didnt mentioned to name the DB instance as localhost.

By default in cognos configuration, content store selects MS SQL server as DB and instance name as 'cm'.

So just create a new database instance with name cm in SQL server Enterprise manager with collation

name Latin1_General_CI_AI.

Check whether SQL server is using default port 1433, by going to Start->Programs->Microsoft SQL Server->Server Network Utility, select TCP/IP under 'Enabled Protocols' anc click on properties.

Open cognos configuration and test the connection to 'Content Store'.

after passing the tes, save the configuration and start the configuration, you should see some 100+ tables created in cm instance.

Are you using default SQL Server instance or did you opt for a named instance?
