Hi Friends,
We have a client who is on Cognos 10.1.1, and wants to upgrade Cognos 10.2.1.
Do we have to uninstall the 10.1.1 and install Cognos 10.2.1 or
Is there a way by which we can upgrade Cognos to the latest version with out uninstalling the previous version.

I would suggest you to set up a 10.2.1 instance in parallel to your existing environment. Once the new environment is set-up, decide on a cutoff date and import your content to the new environment and make it live. This way you will still have the 10.1.1 to go back to in case something goes wrong.

I agree with Charlie absolutely. To answer your question literally, though, you can't install 10.2.1 over the top of 10.1.1 - you must uninstall 10.1.1 and put 10.2.1 in its place. Charlie's suggestion works best, though - run both versions side by side for a short while until you are sure everything upgraded properly. Just make sure you don't breach your license agreements by doing this :)

Thanks you both for the advise. This is the normal practice that we follow while doing an upgrade in Cognos.
I was just thinking if there was a way to upgrade without uninstalling the older version.
Your suggestion has cleared my doubt.

Unfortunately there is no "Upgrade" yet. However this is a feature request that has been requested by quite a few. Hopefully IBM is listening (*hinthintnudgenudgebigblue*) and will make an upgrade path in a future release and those to follow.
If you go parallel, you can do one of these two:
1. Install 10.2.1 instance on the same machine. There is no server license issue doing this.
2. Install 10.2.1 instance on a different machine. There is server license issue doing this but it is generally acceptable process for test/upgrade purposes as long as you don't run them both for long time and as long as the new machine is under compliance once you remove the old server.
Edit: Above reply is my personal opinion based on many upgrades. Always check with your IBM rep on license compliance before changing anything.

Yes my opinion based on upgrades at various companies.
I've seen even audit companies struggling with license so it's always best to check with IBM rep about license as it is different with different clients as well as version.
