Title: How to Improve Cognos 10.2 server preformance
Post by: diasbrad on 05 Aug 2014 08:22:50 AM
Hi Friends,

Currently we have the following configuration on our Cognos 10.2 server.

Its a single server installation.

Hardward:

HDD - 30 GB
Processor - Intel Xeon CPU1.65 GHz
RAM - 4GB

Software
FM, Cognos Sever and IIS on this server

Appart from Cognos, we even have the SQL 2005 server installed and Visual Basic 2008, McAfee on it.

This is a test environment. The issue that we are facing with this server is that the processing of the any activity takes too long.

Is there a way to increase the performance of this server.

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Bradley

You definitely need more RAM. I would add 4G more at a minimum. I would get more hard drive as well. I am actually surprised you could get the OS and all of that software installed and have any meaningful hard drive space left for swap and temp.

Test servers are mostly for functionality as not all test servers get exact hardware of PRD.
If you want to get a better understanding of performance, you have to duplicate what PRD has.

Its slightly difficult to get good performance with this configuration. First you might need to increase resources at server level and then you can plan for changes in cognos tuning settings.

Thanks for your all your response.

Requesting you to please suggenst, How much resource do we need to have in the following situation.

Basic user information.

Database size -  10 GB
Consumers User - 10 nos
Report Developer and Admin - 5 nos

What will be an ideal hardward configuration.

Thanks & regards
Brad

What will be an ideal hardware configuration?

That's a loaded question. Generally the best you could afford depending on how you intend to use this system.

For Cognos the best bang for you buck is fast CPUs with a healthy amount of RAM, with the fastest hard drives you can afford. No matter what Cognos will go to disk and having fast drives helps improve performance a great deal. Make sure to put the Cognos Data and Temp Directories on these fast drives.

If you were looking for more detailed hardware specs sorry to disappoint, but as I first stated. That's a loaded question. ;o)
