Hi Craig,
First of all you will have to decide for what purporse you are going to use that role. For e.g. if you want that role to be used for administration purpose then you will have to add that role to the system administrator role. by doing that you will get all control over the cognos coneection.
when you add your role to system admin, make sure everyone is removed from the system administrator role, else every user will have system administrator rights.
