Title: Joins - Joins Relationships Window
Post by: Nickbruno on 26 Jul 2014 01:24:49 AM
So I have 2 queries in query explorer & when I click on the Join Icon it brings up the Join Relationships box and only 1 query is populated...so query one fields show up on the left but query 2 does not show up on the right. I'm new to cognos and this function as well. Does it have to do with the tables not having some sort of connection? I don't know how to know if the different data sources can be used together. Thanks for your help, I hope this made sense, especially that last part since thats not exactly tech talk

Hi,

The way join objects work in the Query Explorer in Report Studio is that you need to have three queries in total - two queries that feed into the join, and one to accommodate the results ofthe joined data. Let's say you have two existing queries - Query 1 and Query 2. Drag in a new query from the toolbox (Query 3) and then drop a join object from the toolbox on top of this. You will then see that the join object has two "inputs" in the graphic on-screen. Grab Query 1 and drop it into the first input, then grab Query 2 and drop it into the second. You can now double-click the join object and see the items from Query1 (on the left) and Query 2 (on the right) and add the desired join links using the "New Link" button at the top.

Make sure you remember to go to Query 3 afterwards and bring in the desired items from Query 1 and Query 2. Your reporting object (list/crosstab/chart etc) should then be based on Query 3

Cheers!

MF.
