Hierarchies are alternative structures for viewing the same lowest level data through different rollup paths.

So:
* a hierarchy always belongs to a dimension
* a dimension always has one hierarchy
* a dimension can have multiple hierarchies if required.

For example, you might have 3 hierarchies in a date dimension:
* Hierarchy 1 "By Calendar Years"
-- Level 'Calendar Year' eg. 2007
   -- Level 'Month' eg Jan-2007
   -- Level 'Day' eg 01-Jan-2007

* Hierarchy 2 "By Calendar Quarters"
-- Level 'Calendar Year' eg. 2007
-- Level 'Calendar Quarter'  eg. 2007Q1
   -- Level 'Month' eg Jan-2007
   -- Level 'Day' eg 01-Jan-2007

* Hierarchy 3 "By Fiscal Years"
-- Level 'Fiscal Year' eg.  FY 06/07
-- Level 'Fiscal Quarter'  eg. FY 06/07 Q3
   -- Level 'Month' eg Jan-2007
   -- Level 'Day' eg 01-Jan-2007

Hope this helps.

J
