Title: External data source issue
Post by: meeecog on 06 Jun 2014 06:03:55 PM
Hello All

I have a question around external data source ..can any one help me out..

I tried to connect to  a file on my system extract data into cognos and publish package to use the data in a file in cognos .when I tried to get any column from extrnaldata folder in this package I got following error. I'm using FM on my desktop and published package on our DEV server. Excel file is on my laptop...

Any idea if you have to enable any other setting or properties ..etc ..

Error :

RSV-VAL-0010 Failed to load the report sepcification. QE-DEF-0285 the logon failed

qe-def-0323 the dsn(ODBC)/ servename is invalid. Either the DSN is missing
or the host is inaccessible.

RQP-DEF-0068 Unable to connect to at least one database during a multi
database attach to 1 database

Hi,

It looks to me like you are using an ODBC connection to link to the file? My guess is that you have created the ODBC on your local FM machine, but not on the Cognos server? The error appears to be saying that the ODBC cannot be found...

Cheers!

Thanks MF

I didn't create any ODBC on my local system..In order to use external data source do we have to create a ODBC On the server ..pls let me know..

Also I want to know how this external data source is used when we want to use files on the local system and create report ...I'm following all the steps from IBM ..

Any 1 please do let me know ASAP .

Hmmm. Can you detail the exact steps you took to get to this point? Sounds like you might have missed something fundamental. Tell us what you did and we will try to figure out what you might have missed.

Cheers!

Here are the steps what we followed

1 ) We requested our admins to enable External data source and grant access to my ID - Which they have done and I was able to see External Data source option in Report studio etc

2 ) Open Report Studio use any sample package ..using external data source get sample data from a excel file from my computer , follow all the screens while getting data from excel ..publish
package to my folders..

3 ) Once publish is done ..trying to get data elements from external file folder in the package ( which is published in step 2) ....I'm getting above mentioned error..

Thanks for your time ..please do let me know how you guys did these steps at your end ..

Thanks
J

Same issue here. :-\

Similar procedure. We publish the package and then running the report fails with:

RSV-VAL-0010 Failed to load the report specification. QE-DEF-0285 The logon failed. QE-DEF-0323 The DSN(ODBC)/ServiceName is invalid. Either the DSN is missing or the host is inaccessible. RQP-DEF-0068 Unable to connect to at least one database during a multi-database attach to 2 database(s) in:      DS-MUPPS-DEV     Field and Lab Contracts-Final  UDA-SQL-0031 Unable to access the "Field and Lab Contracts-Final" database. Check that the connection parameters to the database are configured correctly. For example, ensure that the data source connection contains the signon information, such as a password, to connect to the database. UDA-SQL-0528 The XML parser returned the following message: "An exception occurred! Type:NetAccessorException, Message:Could not open file: http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd". UDA-SQL-0529 XML "http://localhost:9300/p2pd/servlet/dispatch/metadataUIService?pid=xml_dstream&m_..." is not a valid XML document.

I'm not sure about the ODBC/DSN connection. I didn't have to set anything up to publish the package and the funny thing is that everything works fine when I log in as system administrator. This means it's most likely a permissions issue, so I verified permissions on RS, Data Source Connections, Authors, folders & package capabilities and all seem to be valid. Is there any other capabilities that I have to set permissions on in order for this work properly? ie: "Manage own data source signons" capability, "Data Manager" capability, etc??? I've been fiddling around with permissions to no avail.

I'm also wondering where do I set the permissions for Cognos to read the local Excel file? Is this where the DSN connection comes in? If someone could shine some light on this that would be great.

Thanks in advance!
