Title: Consolidation of Tools in Cognos' future?
Post by: al91206 on 09 May 2014 03:57:30 PM
ARGH - I'm frustrated by the various aka too many tools / environments to show users.  Wondering if others feel the same way and wondering if IBM / Cognos will be consolidating the tools into something like Workspace then just limiting functionality based on license?  That would be a great simplification since those w/o authoring can just use pre-built content, those with can create full-fledged workspaces w/o jumping to Workspace Advanced or Report Studio all within this great blank canvas style environment.

Just wondering if anyone else is thinking along the same lines - or am I just whacked?  LOL

Thx,

Al in SoCal

What I'm seeing is that IBM are gradually simplifying things anyway. The new licensing structure (Remote Recipient/BI User/BI Architect) does not permit use of Query Studio, Analysis Studio, PowerPlay Studio, Metrics Studio or Transformer, so in that respect IBM are steering new business exactly down the kind of road you describe.

Although you can launch CWA using "Do More" from within CW, you can't get to Report Studio that way. I have no idea whether IBM have plans to change this or not. However, you can do a lot of things in Cognos Workspace, such as add widgets for Cognos Connection content, and you could even add a widget based on a report containing URL links to things such as Report Studio. One of my colleagues recently built a report that emulates the Welcome Page of Cognos Connection and added this to a workspace.

Cheers!

MF.
