Title: SAP BW Query to cognos
Post by: fml55555 on 23 Apr 2014 08:19:50 AM
Hi Gurus,

I have a requirement where I need to create reports from a source which is a SAP BW query (Inside a BW cube). I have sucessfully connected to the cube (set it as a datasource) however, when I import the query (or part of it) to framework manager, all the data (or metadata) shows up in the form of regular dimensions. I am unable to create any sort of meaningful connections or build star schemas.

* I have used the option "Data source" when importing the data (in the step "Select metadata source"). Is this correct or should I have used the "Third party metadata sources" option?

* Is there a way to create normal relationships (no scope) between the regular dimensions and achive the reporting requirements (cross tabs, charts etc)

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm far from being any sort of expert on SAP, but as far as I'm aware, BW is a dimensional source, not a relational source. I'd expect you to see regular dimensions and measure dimensions if you are importing InfoQueries.

I'd recommend you take a look at this page:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/cognos/infrastructure/cognos_specific/page551.html

And although a little out of date, I'd recommend a read through this PDF too:

Cheers!

MF.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply and the documents. From what I read in the documents, if the source is OLAP, there is no need for relational modelling. All the relations already exist and I just need to package it and can start working on the reporting studio. PLease correct me if I am wrong about it.

One more question, what if I need to create a formula based on elents in the imported OLAP regular dimensions? Can I create a business view and create calculations just as in relational modelling or do I need to somehow do that in report studio itself?

Once again thank you very much for the prompt reply.

That's my understanding too :)

If you have regular dimensions and measure dimensions you could create calculated attributes on any level of any hierarchy in a regular dimension as desired, and/or you can add new calculated measures to a measure dimension. I haven't ever tested this with BW but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Cheers!
