Title: Funnel Chart (stacked 100%)
Post by: bi4business on 22 Apr 2014 10:58:06 PM
Hi All,

My customer needs a funnel chart, and I am trying to build this without 'external' software.
Does anyone build a funnel chart insight Report Studio ?
I have found a solution insight Excel (http://best-excel-tutorial.com/56-charts/180-funnel-chart), but I can't "flip" the chart with Report Studio.

Kind Regards,

Hi,
Let me start by saying funnel charts are horrible. They are non-comprehensible, in the sense that nobody can tell which part of the funnel is bigger than which. Having said that, we all know the customer is always right and the customer wants undecipherable visualizations, so...
There's no built in funnel chart. On 10.2.1 and up you could probably build one using the RAVE engine (Though I'm not very well versed in the JSON tool, so I can't say for sure). Older versions you can use this method: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/forums/html/topic?id=77777777-0000-0000-0000-000014555499. It's scruffy, but it'll work.

Hi Nimrad,

Thanks for your reply.
First, I agree with you on the Funnel Chart, it's horrible.
But the customer still wants it and I have to build it.
I also told, a bar chart will so also (like your URL), but the customer doesn't like that.
I have build a Funnel Chart they want with "FusionCharts".
It looks "nice" but we are not allowed to install software on the BI Server, so I can't use this.

I have looked into RAVE, but it's all new to me.

It's all new to everyone. I've been told CognosPaul has toyed around with it, maybe he'll have something to contribute.

I've been gone on a vacation for a week, and the first post I see has my name. I'm feelin' the love!

I have built a funnel in RAVE, but I'm still not too satisfied with it. I've attached it here. Simply import as you would any other RAVE graph. Play with it a bit, then come back and we'll talk about modifying it for your needs.

Hi CognosPaul,

Really great!!
I have imported and build the first Funnel Rave chart.

Is there a way to use difference colors per category?

Cheers!

This is actually one of the reasons I'm not satisfied with my solution. An area chart will only support one color per series. The funnel here is actually two area charts on their side, one mirroring the other. I've tried a few different solutions to get it to work, but the only thing that gets close it to switch the area to bars. The problem there is that it's no longer a funnel!

The closest that I've gotten is to stack series, one on the other, and to color each of those. The issue there is making it easy to control that.

I know there's at least one member of the tiger team that reads the forum. Maybe he'll pop in?

I agree it's ugly, awful, and wrong on so many levels, but you can build an inverted stacked triangle chart in Cognos out of the box.

It's just like an ordinary stacked triangle chart, but multiply the measure by -1
