How should I distinguish whether a particular query subject is a fact or dimension query subject.

I don't understand? It's not the same kind of question - it is the exact same question. Is there still some doubt? Are you unsure of something? If so, just say what part isn't clear and we can try to explain in a different way...

if at least one fact query item that is 'L' shaped symbol with yellow color. Then u can say it as fact query subject. if no fact in query subject , then dimension.
for the sake of your better understanding , just go through fm guide , which has been given with the installation of cognos software.

No - this isn't the case. Fact determination is done by the query engine based on cardinalities of relationships, not on the query item usage properties within a query subject.
