Title: Drill through Actions
Post by: Phanindra Kumar on 27 Mar 2014 03:01:27 AM
Hi I am new to cognos BI

I have very basic question about Drill through Definition Action Options.

According to my understanding

Run the Report : this option executes the target report from the content store

Run the Report using dynamic filter: IBM Cognos Business Intelligence match values from the selection context with data in the target (dynamic filtering), select Run the report using dynamic filtering

View the most Recent Report : this options is used to run the most recently saved output version of the report

Now my question is when to use 'view the most recent report' option

and Whats the difference between 'running a report' and 'executing the report'

Any inputs would be helpful

Thanks in advance

If it makes things clearer, consider the "View the most recent report" as meaning "this option is used to retrieve and display the most recently saved output version of the report from the content store"

ie - this option does not run or execute (or however you want to describe the action of firing off a query to retrieve data from the data source and rendering it interactively) - it simply gets the last saved output version (if it exists).

If you do not want to filter the target report and you want the fastest possible method of showing the user a result when they drill through, you can have the Cognos server run and save a static version of the report output in the content store, then drill through to this saved output.

There is no difference between running and executing a report - they are the same thing. The text you quoted is misleading as viewing a report output does not run - it retrieves a saved output.

Cheers!

MF.
