Title: Cognos server performance tunning
Post by: saumil287 on 13 Dec 2013 02:36:38 AM
Hi All,

I am having a requirement to optimise the cognos server.

The current environment includes the following.

Server A: web server and content store is installed
Server B: App server and content mgr is installed

each server is having 64gb RAM, Intel Xeon r 8 core (2 processors)

I had gone through the admin part regarding the default settings.

What needs to be changed in system tunning default values.

Need some guidance on this

Thanks in advance

Do you have any other cognos env ?

Two options I can think of:

1. Copy csk, signkeypair and encryptkeypair from the other server (Server A?)

2. Rename cogstartup.xml to cogstartup.old and set up your configuration from scratch again.

Good luck!

yes, we have installed two same content store in different server.

Now, its getting the issue(can't restart the server)

MFGF -
So, do we need to do all this from cognos configuration underneath of framework manager or cognos configuration?
Sorry, If my question doesn't make sense!

I notified that, the binding credentials in AD namespace and content store user credential, notification credential on cognos configuration, external JMX credentials are all in cross red mark symbol.

So, it getting error when I try to save the configuration,

In the configuration folder within the install directory on your content manager server, rename cogstartup.,xml to cogstartup.old. Launch Cognos Configuration on that server and it should create a new configuration with default settings. If you redefine the configuration on that server, does it then save and start successfully?

If so, you will then need the same cryptographic keys on the other server(s) in your architecture. If they don't transfer across when you save the configuration on those, you may need to manually copy the three folders across.

Shout if you are having trouble!

MFGF - I tried to rename cogstartup.xml to cogstartup.old.
Then launch on to cognos configuration and try to save the configuration its again the same error showing up.

Also when initially installed the server, they didn't give External JMX credential and notification user credentials. it automatically configures.
But now, when I try to save and restart the server, it showing the red cross mark on those area and giving the error.

Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At this point you may want to just try with fresh crypto keys across the board.

Hi,

Earlier, I tried to do the re-encrpt the files. But It only rebuild the encrptkey and signkeypair..Not genrate the csk folder.

Also if I save and restart the server, i am still getting the error....
" Problems were encountered during validation.CAM-CRP-1064 Unable to process the PKCS #7 data because of an internal error. Unable to find the common symmetric key with alias 'V3QvVBkAdUwT92kC6LNeVbsGsyk=' in the keystore 'C:/Program Files/ibm/cognos/c10_64/configuration/csk\jCSKKeystore'.

So, do I need to all the steps cognos configuration from cognos server or framework manager?

MFGF and Grim - I could see all three folders csk, encryptkeypair, signkeypair in install path of cognos configuration from cognos server. But, could not see and rebuild the csk except those 2 folders(encryptkeypair, signkeypair) in install path of cognos configuration from framework manager.

Please let me know, how to regenerate csk on it...

Thanks,

Hi Simi,

Did you follow all the steps exactly in the link above Grim sent? You need to rename cogstartup.xml and remove all three folders...

Your DB server and cognos installation server should be the same. Having at two different places might slow down the performance. - What does it mean?

Can anyone please clarify me?

As per my understanding its only to avoid any network latency.

But its not compulsory to have the same server for DB and cognos.

It will be fine if the DB server and cognos installlation server in the same Data centre.

I think most of the people will keep the DB server and cognos server as different, so that same server will not be loaded much.

@sunosoft -

I think most of the people will keep the DB server and cognos server as different, so that same server will not be loaded much. - Is that means by DB server for example Microsoft Sql Server(DB server) where installed in one windows server and Cognos server is installed in an another windows server? So, is that you are trying to say that?
Can you please explain me again?

Thanks,
Simi

yup.

DB as different server and cognos as different server.

Generally organizations will keep their all server in one place which is called as Data centre.

And I meant to say is it will be enough if you have your DB server and cognos server in the same Data centre.

@sunosoft - I have one more clarification:

Server A  - FM and Cognos server and webserver
Gateway URI -cognos.cgi
Content store DB is MS sql server and localhost:1433

Server B -  FM and Cognos server and webserver
Gateway URI - cognosisapi.dll
Content store DB is MS sql server and <server A name>:instance number(1.What is the difference between content store host:port one which is in server A)

2.Can we configure same Gateway URI to server A whatever we gave in Server B?

3. If I type in the URL :<Server A name>/ibmcognos then its working and open the welcome page.

But, I type in the URL like localhost/ibmcognos -it is not working but it is working in Server B.

What could be the reason.

Sorry! Does my questions make sense?
Can you please clarify those 3 questions?

Thanks in advance,
Simi

Wait! Are you saying you have two separate servers with two separate instances of content manager and both of these content manager instances are configured to point to the same SQL server content database? If so, you're in for big trouble!

Your options are either

a) to have two entirely separate instances of Cognos 10 using separate content stores, or
b) to have a single instance split across two servers using the same content store. In this case you would have content manager on *one* of the servers pointing at your content store database and (if you need it) a standby content manager on the other pointing at a different content store database.

Apologies if I've misunderstood.

Cheers!

MFGF - Are you saying you have two separate servers with two separate instances of content manager and both of these content manager instances are configured to point to the same SQL server content database? - Yes, This is what the Administrator has installed the components for me.

Both Server A and Server B is pointing to same Content Manager database MS Sql server and DB name is "CM".

Only the instance is different. Server A has 1433 and Server B has 1452.
But DB name is "CM"
Type - "Microsoft SQL Server"

Actually, Earlier I tested successfully in Server A with port 1433. But after the encryption keys, when I test the content Store with port 1433 in Server A is not connected to the Database. But, If I use 1452 then it works.

1. What could be the reason?
2. If I choose a)to have two entirely separate instances of Cognos 10 using separate content stores - then Do I need to create different DB like "CM" or anything else?
3.If I choosse b) to have a single instance split across two servers using the same content store. In this case you would have content manager on *one* of the servers pointing at your content store database and (if you need it) a standby content manager on the other pointing at a different content store database.- Then I can test the content store with same instance 1452 in both server and same DB like"CM". So, Is this what you are trying to say?

Please clarify me those questions.

Title: Re: Cognos server performance tunning
Post by: MFGF on 19 Dec 2013 11:31:43 AM
Ok. Let's take a wider view before we figure out what to do here.

The big question is whether you want users to be able to log into both servers and share content? Or should the content for both servers be entirely separate? That's the first thing we need to know.

If the answer is that content is completely separate, then you need entirely separate content store databases and content managers for each server.
If the answer is that they need to share content, you need to define the content store connection on *one* of the servers, and on the other server set the Content Manager URI to point to this server. Delete the content store config on the second server.

Cheers!

Ok - so you want to be able to connect to essentially a single instance of Cognos 10 split across two servers. That seems to be what you are saying.

You need to do as I suggested. Have a single content store database defined on one server, and in the environment of the second server point the content manager URI back to the first server. The second server will not have a Content Store defined. You will need to start the Cognos 10 service on the first server before you start the Cognos 10 service on the second.

Yes you can. You need to remove the crypto keys from server B and start with a clean config on that machine. We already discussed how you can do this. Point the content manager URI at Machine A when you define the environment, and remove the content store from B.

I have question regarding removing the content store from server B.
because, without one conetent store we cant start the service in cognos configuration right?

Please let me know about all.

Thanks,
Simi

Hi,

I already detailed this. In the Environment section, set the Content Manager URI to point to Server A

Go to the Content Store section and delete the Content Store entry. If the Content Manager is running on Server A you will be able to save. If you get errors saying the cryptographic keys cannot be generated, close the config, remove the csk, encryptkeypair and signkeypair folders, rename cogstartup.xml to cogstartup.old and go back into Cognos Configuration. Set up the environment from scratch with the content manager uri pointing to server A. Delete the Content Store entry. Save. Start

It's a little alarming that you don't appear to understand how the architecture of your Cognos implementation works. Are you the person responsible for setting it up? What training have you taken to prepare yourself for the task? Is your company relying on your knowledge of the arcitecture to maintain a stable Cognos instance?

I am not responsible for setting up..But, Somehow, I have involved with the reponsible person..
I don't how he was doing? Its like all collapsing after implemented AD namespace. So, gettting confusing here and there.

But, now when I start the Server , the only message is still appearing like
14:08:17, 'LogService', 'StartService', 'Success'.
After that the service is not started.

What could be the reason.

Thanks,
Simi

Hi Simi,

It will be great if you follow install and config guide once. All the guides provided by IBM are very good and easily understandable. Just go through it once. It will require only 1 or 2 hrs to read it carefully.

Even after following the concerned guides if you face any problem, we are very happy to help you to make it work.

Thanks Sunosoft,

I appriciate you for encouraging me to study those materials instead of asking like Are you responsible for setting up? or Is your company relying on your knowledge of the arcitecture to maintain a stable Cognos instance?

Once again thanks for your suggestion.

Hi,

In your configuration on Server B, select "IBM Cognos Services" and see if the 'Content Manager Service Enabled' setting is still set to "True". If it is, set it to "False" and save and try starting again.

If this doesn't work, tell us what URI values you have defined in the Environment section...

It seems pretty clear that you are in over your head on this task, so someone asking about your role and suggesting training is no surprise. I would suggest you engage some services people to come in and help you. There are lots of great firms out there who could assist with getting things up and running for you and provide some hands-on training at the same time.

Posting a "dig" at someone who has responded with specific answers and actionable suggestions over multiple threads on numerous occasions trying to help you out isn't really the best way to go, don't you think?

MFGF - The problem is solved for now.

Actually, I stopped the service and close the cognos configuration and start the new instance and save, restarted the service then worked..

Thanks for your support! :)
