Title: Cognos 8 Setup Help
Post by: cognos8_1 on 25 May 2007 01:10:28 AM
Could anyone please let me know what are the important factors I need to consider before doing Cognos 8 Installation and configuration. Any detailed or step by step document  for installation would be of great help. Also let me know the system requirements for Cognos 8.

Thanks in advance!

I would say you want to do the following:

1. Read the Congos installation guide theres lots of good info there

2. Determine how many concurrent user you must support

3. Determine what kind of product functionilty will get used  (e.g. all reports output is PDF)

4. If this is a large scale installation you want to engage with Cognos/Partner they will help you determine the minimum hardware requirements for your user base

5. Remember Cognos can scale out as well (multiple app/web servers), so you dont have to spend big on one box

6. My 2 cents I would start with a 2 cpu 4Gb memory box and take it from there, hardware especially memory is very affordable nowdays.

7. Very important is to remember to tune the following:

7.1 Sort Memory setting in cognos configuration (we use 1Mb)

7.2 Disable services that will not get used in cognos configuration

7.3 In Server Administration in cognos connection make sure the interactive/batch report services have values appropriate to your hardware

7.3 In Server Administration in cognos connection make sure the low/high affinity connections for the interactive report service also have values appropriate to your hardware

7.4 In Server Administration in cognos connection make sure logging is not set too high, this make cause slowdown too

7.5 Make sure your db connection pool settings are sufficient in CQEConfig.xml

7.6 Cognos recommends a setting of 1000 for maxProcessor in server.xml

7.7 Cognos recommends a setting of 500 for acceptCount in server.xml

Also check out http://support.cognos.com there are lots of whitepapers on performance tuning cognos installations

Good Luck!

Hello,

Very goods tips.

Today, I installed Cognos 8.2 on 2 servers, Content Manager on a server with the content store and the rest on the other server.

To tune my installation, I followed the "Tuning Cognos ReportNet for a High Performance Environment" and others docs.

First of all, I will add a tip to your list: to change the default font.  Andale WT is the default font, because it manage a lot of

different languages but "the drawback is that Andale font is 20M size, when the Arial font is only 100Kb in size.

To change the default font, go to Cognos Configuration, Actions, Modify global configuration, and server.  The size of your

document (pdf, excel) will be lighter and will generate faster...

Now, I will have 2 questions:

This parameter     Tuning  Governor limit (MB)   is by default 10M, I can't find any doc on this parameter (Server

administration, dispacher, set properties, settings, category=tuning, could anyone let me know what is this parameter and

how to define it ?

The 2d question is about the new database Derby, which is in Cognos 8.2, it would be great to have the feedback of anyone

who install Cognos 8.2 using this DB as Content Store ?

Thanks you

Yes very good point dont forget to change fonts ;) To answer your questions:

1. Governor limit (MB) this is used to control the amount of data sent by the Report Data service (from the docs To limit the resources, such as memory, that are used by Report data service, Cognos 8 restricts the size of the report data that can be sent out. If you receive errors in Cognos 8 Go! Office that a report result is too large, you can increase the size limit for report data by changing the Governor limit setting.)

2. Derby Database this is not intended for production use, more for if you want to install cognos on your own pc just for testing/demos etc.

Hope this answers your questions.

Cheers

HI,

You can install Cognos 8.2 on the same machine.

A virtual directory is about IIS manager:

In IIS manager, in Web Sites, Default Web Site, right click, create virtual directory.  You have to create 2 directory:

1/ : cognos8
path of cognos installation c8/webcontent
Read

2/ : cognos8/cgi-bin
path of cognos installation c8/cgi-bin
Execute

For the rest, you can read the installation documentation (there is a documentation about installing Cognos 8 on one sigle machine)

Regards
