Title: Index Search
Post by: pumccg on 22 Oct 2013 03:35:32 PM
Are there compelling reasons to use the Index Search feature? It seems to create enormous troubles, given the various threads on this topic here and other places. It also appears to consume large hardware (and people) resources.

If I don't want to use it, and stick to the traditional search features in Cognos Connection, are there any issues if I disable the 3 Index services in Cognos Configuration?

I think it all depends on how much "searching" you will be doing and those search needs. The Index Search has the ability to be much more granular depending on the search options and indexes you select.

I've only ever enabled it on specific items and never disabled the services so can't speak to that question.

Thanks Grim. The question arose because I was talking to a group who have just upgraded from a long running and stable 8.4.1 to 10.2.1 FP, and it continues to crash and burn. When asked how they should set the Index Search, I advised them not to bother at the moment as they have more important issues.  I was just concerned at any impact of not running the 3 Index services on anything else. I'd done some tests in my toy 10.2.0 and couldn't see any problems.
