So, we're told that RAVE is the be all and end all of visualizations in Cognos...
Where are the limitations? Can you, for example, create a Gantt-like chart using it? If so, is there a pointer out there to it?
Well, Rave is certainly not the be-all and end-all, but it's a big step forward. It means that the charts available in Cognos 10 are now customisable and extensible - you are not limited to a fixed set. As new ones are developed you can download them and import them into your Cognos instance.
On the downside, customising them isn't a simple task at the moment, but hopefully that will improve with time.
There are a number of visualizations currently available to download from www.analyticszone.com, and one of them is a gantt.
Cheers!
MF.
Hi Alan
Gantt Charts are certainly achievable and available in the current version of RAVE visualisations.
As they stand they are extremely restricted in what you can do with them and have limited properties to extend or customise.
They provide wonderful eye-candy - but beyond that pretty useless for anything real-world or production.
I hope it will improve in time though.

Nick,
Is there something in specific you want to see from a Gantt? Can you provide a mockup of what would be useful? I've been playing with the JSON and it seems to be fairly straightforward. There are something I can't get yet, like combo charts, but I'm still working on it.

It's a shame my friend DG isn't going to IOD this year. I would have introduced you and then got totally bamboozled by the conversation you had with him about modifying visualizations. :)

If only there was some sort of guide that explains the various options. And I've finally decided that overriding the default tooltip on lines is impossible. Unless maybe I start going through the files that control the rendering of the charts... And people wonder why I don't get anything useful done.

Didn't your email exchange with DG get you any further on this? I thought he gave you an idea of what you needed to change? I probably misunderstood, though :)

Oh it works perfectly for different chart types, just not line. I suspect that there's more too it than just that though. There's some background logic going on that's not readily noticeable from the JSON. I think I found the files that control the schema and generation of the charts, going to copy them to my kindle so I'll have some reading on my flight.
Drop him a line before you go - maybe he can point you in the right direction?
