Title: Guidance regarding Installation of cognos fix pack 10.2.1
Post by: saumil287 on 21 Oct 2013 07:43:00 AM
Hi All,
I am planning to install cognos FP1 for cog BI 10.2.1 bcoz of issues in frmework manager prompt which is prompting even after providing values.
I had 2 servers.

1)  Where only web server is install
2)  where application server, content mgr and content store (db2) is installed.

I had gone through the docs
It is saying u need to install FP1 on all cognos server.

My question is
I have to install cog FP1 on both servers 1) and 2) (written above).
Is FP1 must be installed only in cognos app server?

What necessary steps should I take before installing FP1
Does this wil affect the existing server.
What backups to take(for eg reps backup export spec and fm model )

Your guidance is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Your web server machine will have the gateway component of Cognos 10.2.1 currently installed, so to be thorough you need to install the FP1 to update the gateway as well as installing it on your application server machine. If you have FM on other machines, you will need to run the FP1 install on these too.

Installing FP1 does not require 10.2.1 to be uninstalled first - you install the FP over the top of your current installs. Once you have done this, you cannot add further 10.2.1 installs to your existing instances, though - for example you couldn't install Metrics Server 10.2.1 into the existing 10.2.1 FP1 instance. - you would need to uninstall and start again. Just make sure you have all your 10.2.1 components installed before applying the fix pack.

The fix pack will update the report specs in your content store to accommodate the new interactive visualizations in normal reports. I would make sure you have a backup of your content store before you start. To be doubly safe, take a copy of the configuration folder on your app server/content manager machine beforehand too.

Good luck!

MF.

Hi MFGF,
Thanks for your reply.

Since I am also planning to install cognos mobile on current 10.2.1 install.
So If I install FP1 first, I can't install cognos mobile after that.
I need to install mobile first before applying FP1.

Thanks again

If you mean the Mobile Server component - yes - that's correct. You need to install this before you apply the fix pack.

Cheers!

If you end up adding components after a FP install, like Mobile, you just need to re-run the FP install.
Something to keep in mind.

I'm pretty sure it won't let you add components into the instance with the FP applied. It reports it as a different version and stops you. You need to uninstall, resinstall all the non-FP components you need, then re-apply the FP.

Cheers!

I have seen that issue/error before but not on a component install, so I ran a quick test. In this order...

No errors. No issues. ;)

  • Installed BI server 10.2.1
  • Installed FP1
  • Installed Mobile
  • Installed FP1

No errors. No issues. ;)

I stand corrected! Wonder what I did wrong? I'm really pleased this works - it makes the process much easier! :)

Thanks Grim!!

Hi MFGF

After installing FP1, the reports server execution time increases according to ibm document.

So can I install only FP1 32 bit for framework manager only ?
Or I have to install both App srver-web server with 64 bit and FM with 32 bit?
As our issue is in framework manager for prompt issue.

Thanks
saumil

If you install FP1 you do it across all Cognos applications and servers. FM and Transformer included. As FM and Transformer are 32bit only applications you need to install the 32bit FP1.
