Title: Cube package and Drill Through from AS to RS
Post by: Arsenal on 26 Apr 2007 09:20:47 PM
Yep, I'm back with another question, Cognoise Adminstrator  ;D

Guys, we are still trying to establish whether to go with dimensionally modelled Framework Manager model or use our existing cubes. I understand that a data warehouse with pre aggregated values may be needed to optimally use dimensional modeling.

Suppose we were to go with cubes. A data source connection needs to be established to the .mdc file, as I understand. We have a present model(i.e. project) that we use for our reports. Suppose we wanted to bring in 3 cubes to Framework Manager. Would it be possible to bring in the cubes into our present project and make a package, or do we need to create a new project for the cubes? Also, if a new project is required, would a new project be needed for each of the 3 cubes, or can we bring in the 3 cubes into one single new project?

If suppose we do end up making a new project (or several new projectas depending upon whether cubes can be brought into one project or no), does this impact, in any way, drill throughs between As and RS since RS reports will run off one package and AS reports will run off a different package(s)?

You can connect multiple cubes as well as other data sources to a single model.

If you have predefined cubes that are already meeting your reporting needs and you just need to serve them up for consumption, then the easiest approach is to continue to use them.  If for some reason, your cubes aren't meeting your needs, then you may need to evaluate the benefits of each approach in your redesign.

Thanks for your response.

So, we would need 3 different models(i.e. projects) for our 3 cubes

Yeah, I was just thinking about it last nght and realised that each cube will represent a different data source connection.
I don't suppose that the 3 cubes could be brought in under different namespaces in the same model.

so i guess 3 projects for 3 cubes and so 3 packages. But i guess drill through between report studio package and any of the 3 cubes packages should not be a problem

You can have three cubes in one model. But the way you bring them in and publish is quite weird. YOu might be better of with three cubes, each in its own package, unless you need reports combining data from those cubes together.

The decision is that we are going to try both dimensional modeling and cubes

so, we are going to add dimensions to our current relational model in FM, and also use 2 trial cubes and then compare the AS performance

for the 2 cubes, we are creating 2 different projects i.e. say cubeproject1.cpf and cubeproject2.cpf.

i've found out, ad read about it here on this forum, that AS is more an analysis tool rather than a reporting tool. So, the kind of report headers we used to have in Powerplay for cubes is out of the question in AS. I read here that that could be possible in RS, but then in RS, the Contexts are missing which is what the users will use to drill through to the RS report
