Title: Conflicting info - FM on 64 bit box
Post by: houlivan on 28 Mar 2013 08:23:32 AM
Hi,

Can and should Framework Manager 10.2 be installed in a separate directory than the content manager and application tier components in a 64 bit Windows operating system?

I have conflicting information: the supported environments doc ( http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27027080 ) suggests the answer is yes (Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is 64 bit). But the 10.2 Installation and Configuration guide says Framework Manager "...must be installed on a 32 bit computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system".

We will be connecting to Oracle for the content store and data sources. Would it be problematic for that reason to have FM on the same 64 bit box (we'd need 64 bit and 32 bit drivers I would think)

Thanks

Mike

FM is a client tool. There is no need to install it on a server, unless you are used to setting up remote desktop sessions to work on the server itself :)
The FM configuration allows for setting up the correct URI to publish to the content store..

Thanks, yes, I know FM is a client tool. However, our FM 8.4.1 version is installed on the same box as the BI server. That works well for us in that this environment is backed up, properly secured, already has the requisite oracle client software, already has Cognos configuration configured etc. We would prefer having FM on that box; but Cognos 10.2 has features that we would like to utilize that requires the 64 bit architecture.

So, I would love an answer to my original question if anyone has that answer

Appreciate it!

Mike

Hi,

FM is a 32-bit application, and needs to install into a 32-bit rendition folder. If you install onto a server with Cognos 10 64-bit installed (in a 64 bit rendition folder) FM will end up in a separate folder, and will have a separate Cognos Configuration from the 64-bit Cognos server. This is quite normal :) If you are using CQM, *all* your database client libraries need to be 32-bit - both for your 64-bit Cognos server and for 32-bit FM. If you are using DQM, you will be utilising JDBC connections rather than the database native drivers, so the question of 'bitness' becomes irrelevant.

Cheers!

MF.

Consider using a version control system for the FM files instead of keeping them on the server. That makes it MUCH easier for team-based development. We use VSS and use labels to keep release versions of the files together. You need to install Oracle clients on the workstations, but that is a one-time effort..

So using DQM one could say just mind yo' own bitness
:)
