I have continuously noticed that my laptop freezes and things work a lot slower when I work with Cognos 10 as oppsed to 8.4 I have 2 GB RAM only but 8.4 works fine. I have tried the method of running only one version at a time. I made sure only service for 10 was up but no improvement.
Has anybody else noticed the same? Does 10.1 requires more horsepower ? The report takes a lot longer to come up with the Prompt Page. Sometimes Analysis Studio will take forever to open the cube, those kind of things. Sometimes the CPU usage is 98 %
2gb RAM is not enough to host both your OS and C10. There are more services in the C10 architecture than in C8, and it does need more memory.

2GB really isn't enough, but you could try disabling some of the Cognos services.
You can probably disable the following:
Agent
Annotation
Batch
Delivery
Event Management
Human task
Index data
Index search
Index update
Job service
My own laptop has 4gb on it, and Cognos runs very smoothly with all of the services on.
Furthermore:
If not used kill the Query Service (this is the service for Dynamic Query Mode and is not used for querying relational databases) this service consumes 300MB from the start...
