Title: Migrating from DataManager to DataStage
Post by: whogotdafunk on 10 Apr 2012 01:59:38 PM
I'm currently doing some research into migrating from DataManager to DataStage and am wondering if anyone out there has prior experience with this. Are there any tools to assist? What are preferred approaches? Are there any areas where DataStage is lacking compared to DataManager?

At this stage it's mostly research - we do not have a pressing requirement to migrate to DataStage, but there are number of upcoming projects for which DataStage looks like a more appropriate solution. Ideally we would like to have a single ETL tool rather than maintaining both DataStage and DataManger catalogs, hence the interest in migrating/converting our existing ETL.

Thanks in advance for any info on this! Daniel

Daniel, I am looking at needing to do exactly this same thing.  Were you able to develop information outside of this forum that you found helpful to you in migrating from Data Manager to DataStage?  If so, would you mind sharing or pointing me in that direction?

I suspect some of the Information Management guys at IBM would be able to advise on this. Might be worth contacting your IBM Account Manager to see if he can wheel in a DataStage expert to talk to you about migration?

Sad to see you thinking of moving away from Data Manager, though. Oh well.

Given the recent IBM announcement about withdrawing Cognos Data Manager, I would like to re-pose the question I asked a few years ago... Does anyone have experience migrating from Data Manager to DataStage? Are there any tools to aid in the process?

Thanks, Daniel

We have developed some tools to convert Data Manager metadata into InfoServer Extension Mappings. These can be imported into metadata repository for complete specifications. For lift and shift migrations we are developing an utility to generate DS jobs. Please let me   know if you need any specific details.

Hi sidban,

We are planning a migration from Data Manager 10.2 to DS 8.7.
Can you give me some specific details of how you are doing your migration?
Any tips, programming approaches, guides, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mac

Hi ,

My company has set of tools to accelerate the migration of Data Manager to DataStage, it can also auto generate some of the jobs too, if you are interested in discussing further please send me a mail.

Thanks

Simon.

So... how do you get hold of the Migration Assistant Mike Roberts was discussing in the video above?

Here's what you need:

1. You need an install of Data Manager 10.2.1 - no earlier versions will do.
2. You need to download and install Business Intelligence Fix Pack 8 for BI 10.2.1 over the top of your Data Manager 10.2.1 install (you don't need to have BI although it doesn't hurt if you do). You can get 10.2.1 FP8 from IBM's Fix Central site or you can start from here: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24040353
3. You then need to download and install Business Intelligence Interim Fix 4 for BI 10.2.1.8 over the top of your Data Manager 10.2.1.8 install (again, you don't need to have BI). You can also get this from IBM's Fix Central site. When you download IF4 you get versions for all the supported platforms - you only need to extract and install the version for the OS you are using. You also get a Migration Assistant User Guide pdf along with the download too. The link to the IF4 download is http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/quickorder?parent=ibm~Information+Management&product=ibm/Information+Management/Cognos+8+Business+Intelligence&release=All&platform=All&function=fixId&fixids=10.2.1.8-BA-CBI-IF1004:0&includeSupersedes=0&source=fc&login=true

Cheers!

MF.

Hi,

Can you please help me on this. Please suggest me how to develop these tools to convert Data Manager metadata to InfoServer Extension Mappings.

Also I am using Cognos Data Manager 10.1. Is it possible I can use the migration assistant for this version also?

Please email me.

Thanks for the help in advance.

How to develop them? IBM appear to be working on this - do you want to develop your own migration tool independently?

No. You need to be using Data Manager 10.2.1 with Fix Pack 8 to be able to install the required Interim Fix 4 for 10.2.1.8. No other version will do.

Please email me.

Why? We are posting on a public forum here, exchanging knowledge and ideas. Why request information via email? How can anyone know where to email you? This request makes no sense.

I am talking about this post. What kind of tools can be developed by an ETL developer for this migration activity? And what kind of utility can be developed for lift n shift migrations?

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

I want to ask, how much simpler the migration becomes if I upgrade to 10.2.1 with Fix Pack 8 to be able to install the required Interim Fix 4 for 10.2.1.8.

I have some 100 simple ETL's to migrate. Mostly have user defined sql's. Is it a good idea just to rebuild these jobs in datastage from scratch? Or shall I first do my research and then upgrade DM from 10.1 to 10.2.1 because I am not an expert guy in DM.
