Title: generating IQD file from framework manager
Post by: venkiatmaruthi on 29 Feb 2012 11:43:18 AM
Hi,

may be simple question but what to understand how to do.

1) to generate IQD, we must need to publish package to IBM Congos Connection first. I don't see externalize option or publish to location option at first time

2) what is the difference between externalize method of IQD and publish to Network location IQD options.

Thanks.

1> Not neccecary. If you select IQD in the Externalize method of the Query subject property, it will let you generate the IQDs the first time you publish a package.

2> The Externalize Method property tells Cognos whether you want to externalize the Query subject as an IQD, CSV or Tab file whereas the Network location property tells Cognos the physical location on the file system where you want to save those files (in your case IQD files) to be saved.

There is another property for Network location which you can use to publish the package itself. You can do this if your sole purpose is to generate IQDs. In that case, you don't want to publish the package to Cognos Connection so you would choose a network location so that the IQDs are generated and the package does not get published to the portal and you can delete the package from the network location after the IQDs are generated.

1. Last time I checked you didn't have to Publish a package, but you did have to save the model.

2. Externalize will create an external file such as an IQD where as a Publish to Network location is a good way to back up your package.

Externalize

Publish To Network

From the above link...
QuoteYou can also publish a package to a network location. A package on a network location cannot be used by your users. Publishing to a network location is useful for backing up a package.

Note: When you publish to a LAN location, be careful that you do not over-write any existing files, particularly Framework Manager models and the model that is currently open.

Can I ask why you want to create IQDs?  Presumably to use in a cube, you can build a cube based on an FM package without creating IQDs

(apologies if that's inappropriate)

earlier versions doesn't have that opetion so we have to depend on IQd files only.

As far as I concern, all cubes built in Cognos 7 when then started BI in our organization. We are uising that only still and slowly we are chaing to Cognos 8.

Thanks.

HI,

We are in the same process here, modifiying cube from 7.1-7.3 to 8.4.1 and moving from that to 10 or more recent version of Cognos in two years. Instead of just moving the cube, we build a full dimensionnal enironnement. So now people can used analytic studio, report studio, we define metric around 35 metrics (we don't have that before). The process of conversion is almost finished, we move 176 cube an place then in 10 different business domain to have the exact infomration as before and the same report capabilities.
Now we start to integrate all domain in a big domain,(super domain hahaha) and we want to see how that amount of data will be run by Cognos, and how we will arrange that information to be distribute to other systems and with Cognos CSV-Exel file. An other challenge  ;D

Cheers
