We are going to upgrade from 8.3 to 10.1 (Planning)
Can anyone tell me whether switching from Access Manager to Active Directory is obligatory. If it is not are there any particularly good reasons why one should or should not?
Not obligatory. Series 7 security providers are still supported in the 10.1.1 architecture http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27021368#authentication (http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27021368#authentication)
Questions to answer:
- Are you on a supported platform for Access Manager? For example 7.3 MR3 versions are no longer supported
- Do you need to reinstall Access Manager? If so, do you have installation media for Access Manager? Planning media does not include Series 7 security providers.
- If you are doing a fresh install, do you have an LDAP provider to use? They stopped packaging an LDAP provider sometime around release 7.4 MR2 or so (Oracle pulled the license)

Series 7 is still supported but please keep in mind that if you are installing a 64bit environment you will need to use a 32bit Content Manager install in order to source Series 7 Namespace.
I would strongly advise you NOT to use Series 7. It will be deprecated in the near future and you will need to make the jump to AD or LDAP anyway. Do it now while you are still in the "planning/install" phase.
It's Planning - Planning is only 32-bit Content Manager. There's no x64 version

DOH! ;D
I still stand by my "Series 7 = bad, AD/LDAP = good" statement. ;)
Thank you kind sir!
