Title: Congnos 10.1.1 Indexing runs for a very long time & shows errors
Post by: Gene on 23 Dec 2011 01:05:12 PM
Hi folks,

I am hoping somebody can give me some tips on Cognos indexing.

My Cognos Data Manager doesn't have too many reports (maybe a couple of hundred, many of them with saved Excel output), however I see two problems:

Here are typical error messages when indexing fails:

-----------

Interestingly some error messages (such as the last ones) are on the "Samples" shipped with Cognos -- I haven't touched those since installation.

Any suggestions on how to make Cognos indexing operate better?

Thanks in advance,

Gene

I don't think you mean Data Manager, do you? I'm guessing this is a job to create the search indexes for use in searches for content from Cognos Connection/Business Insight etc?

The name of your report in the error log looks very long to me? Have you tried giving it a shorter name to see if this is the cause of the problem?

Hello out there,

seems nearly the same here... Building the index is not the problem, the tasks runs for about five minutes. But we get several errormessages similar to yours (CSN-IUS-0009, 0041, 0051). I've checked the names, the length does not have any effect. I've shorted one name and created a report with longer name.

Has anyone anything on this? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advanced.

Edit: We use Cognos 10.1.1 without any FixPack.

Has anyone reported this to IBM yet?

What specific version and/or FP of Cognos 10 are you running? I think some builds had issues with the indexing and search.

That's not entirely true. Next to the Search button is a 'Search Options' dropdown menu that allows you to search on the name and description fields. This is basically the Cognos 8 search option, which will also work without the indexing.
It's not ideal, but it might be a temporary solution until your indexing has been fixed.

Hi Gene,

You have got two types of errormessage:
1. "An error occurred while indexing item" - The reasons of these errors are some kind of existing errors in the related reports or items. Open the related items and check them manually. A root cause can be that the package referred by the report doesn't exist anymore.
2. "Error indexing annotations for" - I think that the cause of this problem is a known issue in Cognos 10.1.1, which was fixed by IBM in FP1.

It can be turned off as well from Cognos configuration under IBM Cognos Services:

Make sure they all set to false. (This does not work in the 10.1.1 for due to different tier levels), hope it helps.
