Data Item is basically what you use in a Tabular model by dragging it from the Model. Once you have your Tabular Model defined, those data items are then available for your query for your report and are available from the Query Items tab in the Insertable Projects pane.

A data item can also be a calculated item, as well as a query item dragged as is from the model.

In terms of, for example, a list in Report Studio, available items are only those at the Query level for the query associated with the list.

The hierarchy goes:
  List
     Query items
Model items (dragged from query subjects), data items

Note that there can be several levels of queries.
