I can't speak to all limitations or to how many items can be scheduled, although I suspect both depend largely on your hardware available and the nature of the jobs to be scheduled. One limitation I found is that there is no easy way to schedule jobs to run for certain periods, only. For example, we have a job that we run to kick off admin links to move data from one Contributor application to another, every hour. However, this does not need to run after hours or on weekends. The only way to do this would be to create separate schedules for each hour of the week we want this to run. In other words, we would have one schedule to run every Monday at 8a, another for every Monday at 9a, etc. I believe this can be done more simply using SDK, however.
