Title: Cognos on Windows vs. Cognos on Sun

We are about to implement Cognos. What are the pros- and cons to doing this on a Windows platform or on a Sun platform.

Cognos used to tout that a Unix based environment was quicker.  I think this was true in prior versions, but my personal experience is going from a Windows to Sun environment on Cognos 8 did not show a huge performance gain.

Windows is easier to get setup and administer, I think.

If you have an all Apache/WebSphere/Sun or similar environment (and have the support staff internally) then I'd consider installing on Sun.. but if not, I'd just do Windows.

Mike

We found one critical factor was support for the various database data sources we needed to connect to.  In our case, Linux dbms clients weren't available for all our data sources, so we ended up implementing a mixed C8 cluster with both Linux & Windows servers.

Package routing options, etc. make it all work fine, but adds complexity.

I hope this helps.
