ariqe,

I can't help with most of your queries but a catalog (US spelling) is a data dictionary that allows a catalog administrator to create a bridge between a back-end database and a user-friendly set
of folders and fields that users can use to write Cognos (Impromptu) reports.  I say Impromptu because that is what we are (mainly) using.

So if a new table is created, using Cognos Impromptu Administrator - you can import the table into the catalog, defines joins between the fields in the new table and other tables in the database/catalog,
and make a folder that contains all of the fields in the new table and give the field names 'user friendly' names.

This is just a overview but hopefully it will get you started.
