Title: Trying to Copy/Paste a prompt page but parameters are not being recognized
Post by: Tsunami on 09 May 2011 03:36:06 PM
I have several reports that require the same prompts.  I finished one and would like to copy/paste the prompt page.  Once I move the report over, I tried to create variables but there it's saying that there are 'no parameters'.  Why isn't this working?

The parameters work as filters on the queries you use within your report. In order for them to work they have to know that they are filtering new queries.  I don't know of a solution other than re doing them.  I had this same problem a while back and I just re did the parameters each time, or just added the parameter filters to the query after copying and pasting.

Hi,

When u creating the promts cognos will create Queries for all the prompts, so before copying the prompt page copy the Prompt Queries into Query Explorer and then copy the prompt page,
i think it helps you.

thanks

To do this (leverage pre existing prompt page, prompt queries and filters)  just start from the report you already have, and strip out the list/crosstab/whatever data container you have and refill it what you need - if you delete the data container, the query will be gone and you'll have to re-add the filters.

else just start from the old report, delete the data container, re-add one and put in all the data items required, save the report with a name other than the name of the version you're starting from  and re-add the filters from the version you started from by opening it again in RS.

BTW, you may also consider creating a template with the prompt page and query intact. That way, you'll only have to add in data containers and filters for newer reports going forward

Note that in general in Report Studio, if you cut an object instead of deleting it the underlying queries will not be changed. This can save a lot of time in some cases. But if you do use cut instead of delete, you should probably double-check your query when done to be sure you are not still retrieving items you really no longer need.
