Title: Analysis Sudio Versus PowerPlay Studio
Post by: sr001 on 09 May 2011 01:55:54 PM
In Cognos10, do both Analysis Studio and PowerPlay Studio exist? If so, is there a document to compare the features of these two studios? Thank you for your help.

Hi there

Yes both AS and PS exist in 10.  IBM Cognos are fighting hard to dissade customers from using Powerplay Studio / Server as it is a legacy software from Series 7 days however, its fighting a strong tide.  Powerplay is actually more versitial then Analysis Studio (My humble opinion) and is more user firendly (again my humble opinion).

In our organisation we are a heavy user of Powercubes developed in Transformer and also drill through reporting.  The culture is such that AS is only used for adhoc OLAP reporting at a minor level where as Powerplay us used extensively as a mining tool.

I'm not even sure if someone can get Powerplay when they request Cognos 10, unless the customer had it previously.  You'd need to ask.

The above comments are my own and are provided as is for what its worth 2,2 cents so to speak

Cheers

Thank you Peter for your reply. If we are implementing Cognos the first time either using Cognos 8 or 10, would it better to use Analysis Studio (since users are not exposed to Power Play)? I am hesitant to implement Power Play not knowing if IBM will phase this out in future.

Hi sr001,

As you said, if you have the chance to don't used power play studio do it. In future that studio will be obsolete. Not for now because lots of companies don't have the ressources to transform power Cube in star schema. Also, like Aussie said, it's a culture to used cube and powerplay.

Within Cognos 10, Business Insight Advanced provides pretty much all of the functionality available in PowerPlay Studio (plus a lot more), so for new customers it's really a no-brainer decision.  If you are a new customer, you will not be able to purchase PowerPlay Studio anyway - it is available to customers already using PowerPlay but not to new customers as far as I am aware.

Regards,

MF.

Hi MFGF,

Does the below line mean ...
we have powerplay - transformer ,  also cognos 10. So powerplay studio  will come as bundle or separate license?
i don't see power play studio in c10 by default like RS, AS..

" you will not be able to purchase PowerPlay Studio anyway - it is available to customers already using PowerPlay but not to new customers as far as I am aware. "

Hi,

Transformer and the PowerPlay Server install for Cognos 10 are separate things. You will not see PowerPlay Studio unless you have downloaded the PowerPlay Server install and added it into your Cognos 10 instance.

Cheers!

hi

We used PS almost 7 years, we found that PS had the big data running time out issue and it can't shedule as excel. After we upgraded to cognos8.4/10.1/10.2, it had additional license fee. In order to fix above issues and control the liences fee we started to use anlysis studio this year.We got very good feedback form users. As you know, a lot of companys use Analysis Studio now. And AS is very comatible with other cognos BI products, such as report studio, event studio and so on.
By the way, AS can buid asymmetric, big data and routine reports.
Use AS instead of PS, It impacted BI portal's loading balance, the background  process is BIBusTkServerMain.exe that is the same process of report studio that is mean it shared the resource with report studio.

Best regards
Clayton Yan

Sure. You get the PowerPlay Server install for Cognos 10. Stop the Cognos 10 service. Install into the same Cognos 10 instance you already have. Configure. Start the service.

Cheers!

No. You install PowerPlay Server 10.2.1 into your Cognos BI 10.2.1 instance. You cannot mix versions in the same instance.
