Everytime I run the report from Report Studio I am asked to type user ID and password.
Can this be stored somewhere during the session?

Is this the user id and password to authenticate in Cognos 8, or the user id and password to connect to the data source?

The latter.
Report Studio asks for credentials to authenticate in Cognos 8 only after some while, so it's ok.
What is annoying is that everytime I run a report I have to enter id/pwd to connect to data source. Even when the same report was run a minute ago.

Create a sign-on for your data source with the user id and password, and enable the option of using this sign-on for everyone. Hope it'll work.
