Title: The rise of spam
Post by: CognosPaul on 03 Dec 2010 06:29:35 AM
As some of you may have noticed the number of spammers has increased somewhat.

I have messaged the administrators about possible ways of preventing them from registering, or reducing their ability to post once they have registered.

If you notice that we've missed a spam, please don't hesitate to report it. Please don't bother reporting every message in a series of spam, once is enough and we'll get to all of them.

Thank you for your patience and sticking with us through these spammy times. And remember, you can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwy2MPT5RE&feature=fvst)!

I'd like to publicly thank Paul for his vigilance and dedication in finding and removing literally hundreds of spam posts over the past week or so.  From the looks of things, a particular individual is creating lots of new accounts and using those to foist unwanted and often inappropriate content onto this forum.  Just to echo Paul's request, please don't hesitate to use the 'Report to Moderator' link to report inappropriate posts to us, and we will do our very best to delete these as quickly as possible and ban the offending user accounts.

Many thanks,

MF.

Just out of curiosity, I have been keeping track of the spammer accounts that I have been banning recently.  I started recording them on 4th December, and since that time I have banned 333 user accounts!  Please stay vigil and keep reporting any spam posts to the moderators, and we will clean them up and ban the originating accounts as quickly as we can.

Thanks,

MF.

Thanks to you guys for dealing with the spam and the spammers so efficiently.

On the flip side however, I have not finished (or even started) my christmas shopping so I guess I'll need to look elsewhere if I decide to get some Ugg boots or Nike sneakers :)

Wow.  We went a whole 12 hours without a spammer creating an account.  This must be a record of late - here's hoping it continues! :)

Well - I was sort of right.  Now 14 hours without a spammer successfully joining (yay!), but the ban logs show 84 attempts by banned usernames/ip addresses/email addresses to connect to the forum so far today...
